Clearly I not really using this blog – and why should I, when I host my own copy of WordPress, where I can use custom themes, plugins and hack core files when necessary? (And it sometimes is.) I signed up for and received my Golden Ticket when the site was new, but now it’s open to everybody. Still, I’ve felt guilty about hogging server space and the username ever since I got it.

Now I have a real justification for doing so – my API key. Available only to members, I need the API key to operate Akismet, the anti-comment spam plugin, which came packaged with the WP 2.0 upgrade. I had noticed an increase in comment spam that was getting through the WP filters, mostly because I got sick of holding legitimate comments up for moderation and turned that requirement off. The comment spammers have gotten wise to WordPress’s built-in “hold for moderation if the comment contains more than two links” feature, and were starting to post short comments using only the site link given with the commentator’s name. So far, Askimet is working very well at catching these – I wonder how long it will take for the spammers to figure out how to get around that.

Now I can think of this site as just another blog that came with a membership, like the one I never use over at Bloglines. I love Bloglines as an online RSS feed aggregator, accessible to me from any computer (or operating system on the same computer.) Other unused freebies includes email at SourceForge and other sites that I got just for the IM identities.
